Lessons Learned from Starting a Podcast

Updated: Mar 8

Starting a podcast with almost a year ago with a complete stranger from the internet, in the form of Steve (@Runnermansteve) has been an eye-opening journey for me. Its bee a journey that’s not just about discussing topics and sharing insights but also about self-discovery. It's fascinating how delving into a project like the Point 99 Podcast can unearth qualities within us that might have remained hidden otherwise. So for anyone remotely considering starting a podcast and wanting to know more about it or if they have what it takes, here are some of the key lessons I've learned about myself through my own podcasting venture:

Perseverance:

With a commitment to consistently deliver quality content for the listening audience, it has taught me the value of perseverance. There are days when challenges seem insurmountable, where alternative guests have to be booked and recorded at the last minute, but pushing through those moments has proven to be immensely rewarding. Perseverance is the fuel that keeps the podcast and myself going, even when the going gets tough.

Dedication:

The dedication required to nurture and grow a podcast has been an extremely enlightening experience. It's not just about showing up; it's about giving it your all, continuously striving for improvement, and staying dedicated to the cause. Dedication is what turns an idea into a meaningful reality. If you believe in your concept but you're not sure on how to deliver it then dedication to learning and striving to get your project off the ground will do so much for your entire being.

Resilience:

In the face of setbacks and unforeseen obstacles, resilience becomes our best ally. The podcasting journey has shown me that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about adapting, learning, and becoming stronger through the challenges we encounter.

Flexibility:

Remaining flexible in the approach has been crucial. The landscape of podcasting, like many other endeavors, is dynamic but also fiercly competitive if you let it be. Embracing change, adjusting strategies, and being open to new ideas have been pivotal in navigating this ever-evolving realm. Communication throughout this flexible approach is also key. We have our own path to walk but we also don't want to feel like we're stepping on anyone elses toes (or those feeling we are either) and making enemies.

Commitment:

Commitment to our audience, our topics, and for a time each other as co-hosts has been paramount. Even while Steve was with the show in season one, it wasn't merely about sticking to a schedule; it was about honoring the commitment to delivering value and meaningful discussions every single time.

Reflecting on these qualities I’ve realized that embarking on this podcasting journey has been as much about personal growth as it has been about content creation. These qualities; perseverance, dedication, resilience, flexibility, and commitment have not only contributed to the success of the podcast but have also become integral parts of my personal and professional life.

Through this experience I’ve learned to appreciate the power of self-reflection and the importance of continuously discovering new aspects of ourselves. It’s exciting to think about what else I might learn as we continue this journey with our podcast. Cheers to growth, learning, the new connections and friends made along the way and embracing the lessons that come our way!

I have so much to be thankful for as a result of starting the podcast with Steve, as well as to the man himself for going along with the whole idea in the first place. I'll forever be indepted to Steve for his support, encourangement and overriding positivity throughout his time with the show and ever since he had to step away from the project. Here's to Steve!
